Memoirs of a Geisha is an Academy Award-winning movie adaptation of the novel of the same name, produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and directed by Rob Marshall. It was released in the United States on December 9, 2005 by Columbia Pictures, DreamWorks and Spyglass Entertainment. It starred Zhang Ziyi, Ken Watanabe, Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh, Youki Kudoh, and Suzuka Ohgo. (In reality, Kudoh, Ohgo, and Watanabe are Japanese, while Zhang and Gong are Chinese, and Yeoh is Malaysian of Chinese descent.) Ohgo plays the younger Sayuri in the movie, which was filmed in southern California and in several locations in Kyoto, including the Kiyomizu-dera temple and the Fushimi Inari-taisha shrine.
The film is not an adaptation of the television series, but more of a homage. It is about a witch (Kidman) who wants to give up magic and have a normal life. She meets a failing movie star (Ferrell) who wants to find an unknown actress to play a witch ?›???? and his wife ?›???? in a TV show, a modern adaptation of the classic TV show Bewitched. When she becomes more popular than him he decides to downplay her role and make the show focus on Darrin (thus garnering the audience's attention). He soon finds out the hard way, however, that she really is a witch. Meanwhile the "spirits" of the old Bewitched television show work their own magic on Isabel & Jack by ensuring that the couple ends up in a happy union of witch to mortal like on the original series.
